Mise-en-Scène Sherlock Holmes

The scene I decided to choose was the scene where Sherlock comes face to face with Lord Coward in his house. This scene depicts Sherlock confronting Lord Coward after being kidnapped. He states how Lord Coward has done an awful job of hiding his identity and states the many clues he found to figuring out what he has been up to. From the bandages on his hand, to his shoes, and more. Then shortly after, he creates a smoke too thick to see through so he can bypass Lord Coward and jump out the window into the water and make it back to his friends.

In this scene, the lighting is dim with little lighting, it almost gives a spark of hope but also adds to the atmosphere and tension if Lord Coward getting ready to kill him... it gives off a sinister feeling. The outfits show who is in authority here. Sherlock wears a dirty little shirt with suspenders and pants, while Lord Coward wears a nice fest and slacks. In a way it shows who really has the power here, in some ways. The background is also beautifully put together, the interior showing a rich environment and more of that authority. The way the fireplace is set also shows the true intentions of the scene, since it is perfectly sat to where Sherlock can hide but also has a long distance between him and his competitor, creating tension and suspense as Lord Coward walks further into the smoke. The camera movements and close-ups give you a perspective on both. You can see Sherlock seems confident, cocky even, while Lord Coward is a bit frantic, worried, and when the camera pans to the smoke you can see why, because there is not much one could see.

In this scene, Sherlock sounds confident. He has a plan, he knows he can execute it well, he is not worried. But Lord Coward is, he tries to sound steady, confident, but you can tell there's doubt in his voice and tone. The body language, even the faces they both have. Lord Coward shows worry, his expressions halter and shake a bit while sherlocks stays confident and steady.

What grabbed my attention with this scene was how there was so much suspense with this scene. I think the subtle quietness, and the focus on the two talking really shows the tension and suspense until the action really starts happening. Out of all the scenes, I was most engaged with this. I do not think I was too surprised by anything since I did not even know what to expect, but the movie was still nice. The Mise-en-Scène experience helped me go more in depth with the topic and helps me know what to look out for in the future next time I watch a film.
